TRNSMT festival - Saturday 30th June

The beginning of the summer for me was spent dancing along to some of my favourite bands in the surprisingly hot Glasgow sunshine and as my first festival experience it was certainly an unforgettable one.  The main reason for buying a TRNSMT ticket was definitely due to Liam Gallagher headlining, being a massive Oasis fan and Liam being my favourite Gallagher brother, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off my summer holidays than absolutely belting out the words to 'Some Might Say' in a field with my family, especially after missing his 2017 tour. Liam Gallagher delivered a strong set packed full of Oasis classics, songs from his debut album and fan favourites such as 'Bring It On Down'. The set was abruptly stopped by someone climbing the speaker tower and basically refusing to come down resulting in Liam having to cut cigarettes and alcohol short. However nothing can stop NMEs most recent 'God-like genius' and he carried on with the show, perform...

The underappreciated genius of The Kinks

The Kinks are a name that should be up there with the greatest of the British invasion bands of the 1960s such as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones but are often overlooked when people mention Britain's great contribution to popular music. They are by no means an obscure band that no one has heard of but don't get half of the recognition they deserve for their contribution to British popular music and are ridiculously underrated outside of England. They did have their fair share of chart hits in their prime, in 1964 You Really Got Me hit number 1 in the UK and their single Sunny Afternoon reached number 1 and was sitting happily at the top end of the UK charts in the summer of 1966 when England won the world cup. Many of their singles have iconic riffs that are instantly recognisable to any music fan but something that always goes unnoticed is the amount of talent possessed by both of the Davies brothers. Dave Davies was an outstanding guitar player and ...

Wolf Alice gig review – Newcastle O2 academy 13th November 2017

Wolf Alice are one of my favourite bands around today and seeing them live was something I had wanted to do since the release of My Love Is Cool in 2015 and in the summer when they announced a tour and I bought tickets for this gig I was very excited to say the least. As the lights went down and the gig began the crowd which had been pretty much stood still throughout the support acts immediately came to life and started moving around as soon as they heard the opening notes of heavenward and remained dancing and jumping around throughout  every upbeat song such as Yuk Foo, You’re A Germ and Moaning Lisa Smile.  The set list was every Wolf Alice fans dream, including  energetic songs from both albums, euphoric sing along songs such as Don’t Delete the kisses and everything in between. One of the best moments of the whole gig for me was when they played Silk which had been removed from the set list for previous gigs but was added back, this is my person...

Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band at 50

Image
It was 50 years ago today Sgt Pepper taught the band to play (well not quite) and this album still has such a significant impact on the music of today. In 1967 the Beatles made the decision to no longer play live due to it being too dangerous and losing interest in performing as John Lennon put it 'Beatles concerts are nothing to do with music anymore'. This left them more room to experiment with their songs knowing that they wouldn't have to replicate the sounds to play them live. They were previously limited to what songs they could play as they only had a two guitar, bass and drum stage set up but with this limitation now no longer there they were free to do whatever they wanted and so Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band was born… This album contains so many iconic songs and opens with the title track which is an introduction to the military style band that the Beatles turned themselves into for this LP. Personally, I feel this is the perfect introduction to wha...
