TRNSMT festival - Saturday 30th June
The beginning of the summer for me was spent dancing along to some of my favourite bands in the surprisingly hot Glasgow sunshine and as my first festival experience it was certainly an unforgettable one.
The main reason for buying a TRNSMT ticket was definitely due to Liam Gallagher headlining, being a massive Oasis fan and Liam being my favourite Gallagher brother, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off my summer holidays than absolutely belting out the words to 'Some Might Say' in a field with my family, especially after missing his 2017 tour. Liam Gallagher delivered a strong set packed full of Oasis classics, songs from his debut album and fan favourites such as 'Bring It On Down'. The set was abruptly stopped by someone climbing the speaker tower and basically refusing to come down resulting in Liam having to cut cigarettes and alcohol short. However nothing can stop NMEs most recent 'God-like genius' and he carried on with the show, performing an amazing encore including Live Forever and id be lying if I said that it wasn't one of the best moments of my life.
An added bonus was Courteeners who well and truly did warm up the crowd before Gallagher came out. I wouldn't consider myself a huge Courteeners fan just because I haven't heard enough of their music but the songs I do know, I love. Their set opened with 'Are You In Love With a Notion?' which truly brought the crowd to life and they kept it going strong with 'Cavorting'. Their set list included fan favourites and their most well known songs from pretty much all of their albums but as many would agree the highlight of their set was by far their most popular song 'Not Nineteen Forever' which hyped the crowd up in a way I've never seen happen before. Flares were set off and pints came flying left right and center (crazy if you ask me considering the price of drinks at festivals) and there wasn't a soul stood still in sight. their set closed with what took you so long and as they left the stage I found myself wanting to listen to more of their music on my car journey home. Liam Fray truly is a strong front man.
Its no secret that I love Wolf Alice so I was definitely not complaining about seeing them again. They are an impressive live band and although they didn't draw in a huge crowd compared to Liam Gallagher or Courteeners they interacted perfectly with those who came to watch them. Their set list included almost none of my favourite songs yet i was still thoroughly impressed by them yet again as in my eyes they really cant do any wrong when it comes to live sets.Giant Peach will always remain one of the most epic ways to close a set, weather it is at their own gig or a festival. It is a shame that Wolf Alice are not more popular as they definitely have the potential as a live band to headline festivals one day in the future.
Gerry Cinnamon was an act which I hadn't heard much of prior to this weekend but the Scottish crowd went mad for him. Hours before he even took to the stage the air was filled with Gerry Cinnamon chants and I even heard TRNSMT referred to as 'Gerry Cinnamon fest'. During his set I was surrounded by people who knew every single word he was singing and multiple flares were set off because in the words of Gerry himself 'no pyro no party'. Since witnessing his live set, i have listened to his music and i am kicking myself for not listening to it before i saw him. The atmosphere from the crowd was like no other and the future looks strong for Gerry Cinnamon.
Shed Seven were one of the first acts of the day and really stared to warm the crowd up considering how early they played. They are 'indie veterans' as my mum described them and seemed to bring their own following along with them. For me the highlights of their set were when they played the end of The Stone Roses I Am The Resurrection and the euphoric song chasing rainbows which seemed to unite the crowd.
I left this past weekend with a lot of new music to listen to and an even bigger admiration for Liam Gallagher (if that is actually possible) and there is no doubt that I will return to TRNSMT festival next year if the timing is right and the lineup is even half as good. Unfortunately this year i was only able to go to one day of the festival but would definitely do a full weekend in the future.
